How to Succeed by Doing Nothing
This Sunday I embraced the art of doing nothing (aside from ferrying the girls around), but the rest of my family were medal winners! I would argue that we all achieved success in our own unique ways.
Kathy took on the iconic 6km swim around Brownsea Island, completing it in 2 hours and 12 minutes. This stunning oasis, located in Poole Harbour, was teeming with life, both from the surrounding wildlife and the 250 fellow open water swimmers. Kathy, who is particularly sensitive to the cold thanks to Reynaud's Syndrome, faced more than just the physical challenge of the swim. The cold restricted the length of her sea training sessions, making this event more challenging than she would have liked.
Yet, she persevered and triumphed, bringing home not just memories but a rather epic swimming cap!
Meanwhile, Olivia indulged in her passion for horse riding by participating in her second-ever showjumping event. Competing on her loan pony, Beauty, she had a night(mare) on the first course of 50cm high fences where "Beauty” was anything but and decided to refuse all purple fences.
She persevered and came back for the more challenging event, with the fences now at a height of 65-70cm. Her tenacity paid off as she won this class, earning not only a first-place rosette but also a coveted qualification for the Sunshine Tour Championships in Surrey this September.
Amy’s growing love for squash took her to the Dorset end-of-season tournament at West Hants Racquet Club. Since picking up a racquet just over a year ago, her skills have gone from strength to strength. Competing against peers from across the county, she emerged victorious in her group, beating her friend in the final match to claim her trophy (Amy’s on the left).
Finally, as a member of our work family, Lesley embarked on the first step of her next adventure by trying out her new gravel bike in the New Forest. Thirty-five sunny miles later, Lesley and her husband Adam are on their way towards their 100-mile Ride London event next May.
My Journey of Nothing
So how could I claim success by seemingly doing nothing?
On Sunday, I completed a challenging 5-day fast. My resolve was particularly tested on Saturday evening having been despatched to do the family food shop at Waitrose, where the sights of cheese and wine were almost too tempting. However, I adhered strictly to my regimen of water, black coffee, and fruit tea. Now, feeling reinvigorated and truly appreciative of my morning eggs, I've rediscovered the value of restraint and simplicity.
Sometimes, doing nothing can be success in itself.
